Help with Digital Collections

The Princeton University Library Digital Collections are drawn from the administrative records, manuscripts, texts, photographs and other holdings from rare books and special collections departments at the library.

Exploring the Collections

The Library's Digital Collections offer two methods of retrieval: items can be browsed by collection title or searched using either the basic search or advanced search options.

Browse Digital Collections
To browse the collections, click the browse option on the main menu. Results will be listed in alphabetical order by collection title with a thumbnail image and a brief project description.
Basic Search
A simple keyword search can be performed by entering a term or partial term into the search box at the top of any page. This search uses Boolean operators such as and, or, and not.
Advanced Search
The advanced search option allows for more powerful and focused searching. Searches can be limited by type of item, such as collections, images, or texts, and can be restricted to the following fields: keyword, title, creator, and subjects
Interpreting Search Results
Search results include the item title, creator and date of creation (if applicable or available). Also, a short summary description of the items is included when available.
Search results may be limited by type item; collections, images, or texts. The default view shows results

Navigating Within a Collection

Viewing and Navigating through Images
Use the controls at the top of the page to navigate through images. These controls may also be used to magnify images or view them as thumbnails.
